[Pre-180, My SJI Days] First Singing Performance in SJI Arts Fest Closing Night, 'Spectrum'
I did something new during my days in SJI. Guess what? I SANG at the inaugural SJI Arts Fest in 2014! :) It was the first time where I got to sing a full song in front of an audience.
I have always loved singing since I was young. As such, I mustered up my courage to sign up as a performer for 'Spectrum', the night time concert-cum-closing ceremony of the inaugural SJI Arts Fest.
It was really a one-in-a-lifetime experience. I had initially planned to sing one Korean song, but I was really glad that my teacher requested for me to sing a second song--a duet with our school band, the Shantians, during my first rehearsal. As such, I got to sing a Korean song, 'My Destiny' by Lyn, as well as an English song, 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Keane.
Practising for the songs were difficult. Firstly, I had to practise singing in Korean. Additionally, the song was especially high-pitched. At times I realised that I strained my throat a little too much. To overcome this difficulty, I had to change a way of singing by learning how to sing from my diaphragm. That was when things started to get better. :) Secondly, I had to master 'Somewhere Only We Know' within five days (that was the time from the first rehearsal (when my teacher suggested the duet) to the performance day. Memorising both the lyrics and the tune was particularly hard. I was always confused about the tune and the lyrics. To improve, I had to read out the lyrics line by line and memorise them before singing with the tune. Learning the second song was so bad that I messed up on my second rehearsal. I was so scared that I will mess up my actual performance.
Luckily, I did not. With additional practices, my hard work paid off. I was able to sing on the stage with confidence. I really enjoyed my own performance, and I gained a lot of experience on singing live on stage. It reinforced my belief that practice makes perfect :)
Do have a listen of my performance with the Shantians. :)
